About Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla was born on 17th of March in 1962 in Karnal, India to the Banarasi Lal Chawla and Sanjyothi Chawla and died on 1st of February in 2003. She became the first woman in space from India as an Indian-American astronaut. She was the first, as a mission specialist and primary operator of robotic arm, who had flown on the Space Shuttle Columbia in the year 1997. She died in a disaster of the Space Shuttle Columbia. She spent in the space for 31 days, 14 hours and 54 minutes. She got married to the Jean-Pierre Harrison. She was also the first woman who had studied the aeronautical engineering.
How Kalpana Chawla became the First Woman of India in Space
She was well educated in Aeronautical Engineering from the Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh in 1982. After getting her bachelor degree from India, she went to the US to complete her M.S. degree in aerospace engineering from University of Texas, Arlington in 1984. She also completed her 2nd M.S. degree (1986) and PhD in aerospace engineering (1988) from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
After completing her education in 1988, she joined NASA as the vice president and Flight Instructor of Overset Methods, Inc as a start of her career as an astronaut. Later in 1993, she joined, as a vice-president, to the overset Methods, Los Altos, California. She was very hard working in nature and in 2003; she was allocated to the team at the launch of STS-107 (US space shuttle Columbia).
Achievements of Kalpana Chawla as a First Woman of India in Space
She became the first Indian born woman in space and American astronaut as well as the 2nd person of the India to fly in the space. She was assigned as a primary operator of robotic arm of the spacecraft.
She was an experienced pilot as well as the FAA-certified flight instructor for single and multi-engine commercial airplanes, gliders and seaplanes. She was the big achiever of the honors like NASA Space Flight Medal, Congressional Space Medal of Honor and NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
