Sarojini Naidu, the “Nightingale of India, Bharatiya Kokila”, was a genius woman, Indian independence activist and poet. She became the first woman of India who hold the office as a governor of an Indian state, UP. She was born on 13th of February in 1879 in Hyderabad, India to the Aghore Nath Chattopadhyay and Barada Sundari Debi. She got her education from the University of Madras, King’s College London and Girton College, Cambridge, England. She got married to the Dr. Govindarajulu Naidu, who was a doctor by profession.
How Sarojini Naidu became the First Woman Governor of India
She had joined the Indian independence movement in 1905 and elected as the first Indian woman President of the Congress in 1925. In between, she also worked for issues of youth welfare, labour dignity and freedom of women. After the Independence of India, she became the first woman Governor of Uttar Pradesh state of India from 1947 to 1949.

She became the first Indian woman who hold the office as the President of the Indian National Congress as well as the Governor of Indian state, UP. Her birthday anniversary, 13th of February, has been marked to be celebrated as the Women’s Day all across the India. She helped in the establishment of the Women’s Indian Association and worked for the labour dignity, youth welfare and freedom of women.
She was honored with the “hind a kesari medal” for her great support during the plague epidemic the India by the British government. She worked as a leader for the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India movement as well. She was a great poet and her poems were published in the “The Broken Exes”.
